## Probable cause

THE FAILURE OF THE PILOT-IN-COMMAND (STUDENT PILOT) TO MAINTAIN AN AIRSPEED ABOVE STALL, AND HIS INADVERTENT STALL AND SPIN.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - in flight, go-around (vfr)
  - airspeed(vs) - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - stall/spin - inadvertent, pilot in command (cause)
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - uncontrolled

## Analysis

THE STUDENT PILOT WAS ON HIS FIRST SOLO CROSS-COUNTRY FLIGHT AND WAS OBSERVED TO BE HIGH AND FAST ON APPROACH FOR THE RUNWAY. HE ANNOUNCED OVER UNICOM RADIO THAT HE WAS EXECUTING A GO-AROUND. WITNESSES OBSERVED AND HEARD HIM ADD POWER, AND THE NOSE PITCHED UP, THE AIRPLANE STALLED, ROLLED LEFT AND CRASHED.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920530017159A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920530017159A), May 30, 1992: Cessna 172H, Clewiston, FL, Destroyed, 1 fatal. Too high on approach for landing. Began go around. Pitched up nose high. Stalled and crashed. On solo crosscountry.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
