## Probable cause

FAILURE OF THE PILOT-IN-COMMAND TO PERFORM A GO-AROUND AND INADVERTENT STALL.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - in flight, landing - flare/touchdown
  - flare - premature, passenger
  - go-around - not performed, pilot in command (cause)
  - lack of total experience in type operation, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - stall/mush - inadvertent, pilot in command (cause)
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - uncontrolled
  - terrain condition - ground
- Nose gear collapsed, landing - flare/touchdown
- Nose over, landing - flare/touchdown

## Analysis

THE STUDENT PLT WAS FLYING THE ACFT FROM THE LT SEAT WHILE THE PVT PLT RATED PIC WAS SEATED IN THE RT. THE ACFT WAS HIGH & FAST WHILE ON FINAL APCH WITH FULL FLAPS LOWERED & THE STUDENT FLARED TOO SOON. THE ACFT FLOATED, THEN TOUCHED DOWN MOMENTARILY & BECAME AIRBORNE. THE PIC TOOK CONTROL OF THE ACFT BUT SAID HE DID NOT WANT TO INITIATE A GO-AROUND WITH FULL FLAPS LOWERED. THE STUDENT PLT STATED THAT THE PIC APPLIED FULL AFT CONTROL COLUMN INPUT & THE ACFT INADVERTENTLY STALLED & IMPACTED THE GROUND NOSE LOW. THE NOSE LANDING GEAR COLLAPSED & THE ACFT NOSED OVER & CAME TO REST.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19911218056999A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19911218056999A), Dec 18, 1991: Cessna 172N, Lyman, MS, Substantial damage. Allowed student to fly left seat. Came in too high and fast. Ballooned, pilot took over, pulled yoke full back.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
