## Probable cause

THE PILOT-IN-COMMAND'S FAILURE TO REFUEL THE AIRPLANE WHICH RESULTED IN A TOTAL LOSS OF ENGINE POWER IN FLIGHT DUE TO FUEL EXHAUSTION, SUBSEQUENT FORCED LANDING, AND ON GROUND COLLISION WITH A TREE ON LANDING ROLL OUT.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power, approach - vfr pattern - final approach
  - refueling - not performed, pilot in command (cause)
  - fluid,fuel - exhaustion
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- On ground/water collision with object, landing - roll
  - object - tree(s)

## Analysis

THE COMMERCIAL PILOT WAS ON FINAL APPROACH FOR LANDING, WHEN THE AIRPLANE EXPERIENCED A TOTAL LOSS OF ENGINE POWER. A FORCED LANDING WAS ACCOMPLISHED TO A FIELD. THE AIRPLANE COLLIDED WITH A TREE ON LANDING ROLL OUT. THE ON SCENE INVESTIGATION CONDUCTED BY THE FAA, REVEALED THE LEFT AND RIGHT FUEL TANKS WERE NOT RUPTURED. BOTH FUEL TANKS WERE DRAINED. TWO AND ONE HALF GALLONS OF FUEL WAS DRAINED FROM THE RIGHT FUEL TANK, AND ONE QUARTER OF A GALLON OF FUEL WAS DRAINED FROM THE LEFT FUEL TANK. THE OWNER'S MANUAL FOR THE CESSNA 150 STATES THAT 3.5 GALLONS OF FUEL ARE UNUSABLE.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19920907039159A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920907039159A), Sep 7, 1992: Cessna 150H, Hollywood, FL, Substantial damage. Ran out of fuel 30 minutes after takeoff. Struck a tree landing off airport.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
