## Probable cause

THE PILOT IN COMMAND'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL ON LANDING ROLL OUT, RESULTING IN AN ON GROUND LOSS OF CONTROL (GROUND LOOP) AND SUBSEQUENT NOSE OVER.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - ground loop/swerve
- Nose over, landing - roll

## Analysis

THE COMMERCIAL PILOT WAS CONDUCTING A WHEEL LANDING TO THE ACTIVE RUNWAY. ON LANDING ROLL OUT, THE AIRPLANE STARTED TO VEER TO THE RIGHT. THE PILOT APPLIED LEFT RUDDER AND THE AIRPLANE WENT STRAIGHT FOR A SHORT DISTANCE AND VEERED TO THE LEFT. THE PILOT APPLIED FULL RIGHT RUDDER AND APPLIED POWER WITH NEGATIVE RESULTS. THE AIRPLANE EXPERIENCED AN ON GROUND LOSS OF CONTROL AND DEPARTED THE RUNWAY, NOSED OVER, AND CAME TO REST ON ITS BACK.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19921115046609A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19921115046609A), Nov 15, 1992: Cessna 180K, Wiggins, MS, Substantial damage. Veered off runway on wheel landing into soft sand and nosed over. Found main gear misaligned but possible damage.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
