## Probable cause

THE IMPROPER IN FLIGHT DECISION OF THE PILOT IN COMMAND TO ATTEMPT A LONG LANDING, DOWNWIND ON A SHORT WET SOD RUNWAY. CONTRIBUTING TO THE ACCIDENT WAS THE FAILURE OF THE PILOT IN COMMAND TO EXECUTE A GO AROUND WHEN OBSERVING THE WIND AND LANDING CONDITIONS.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Nose over, landing - flare/touchdown
  - terrain condition - wet (contributing factor)
  - in-flight planning/decision - improper, pilot in command (cause)
  - terrain condition - grass (contributing factor)
  - all available runway - not issued, pilot in command (cause)
  - ground loop/swerve - intentional, pilot in command (cause)
  - go-around - not performed, pilot in command (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE PRIVATE PILOT STATED HE ATTEMPTED TO LAND LONG ON A SHORT, WET SOD RUNWAY WITH A TAILWIND. HE REALIZED HE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO STOP THE AIRPLANE, AND HE EXECUTED AN INTENTIONAL GROUND LOOP TO AVOID TREES AT THE END OF THE RUNWAY. THE AIRPLANE NOSED OVER AND THE WING WAS SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19921201052029A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19921201052029A), Dec 1, 1992: Cessna 182B, Aberdeen, NC, Substantial damage. Landed long on wet grass strip. Ground looped near end of runway to avoid running off end into trees.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
