## Probable cause

THE PILOT-IN-COMMAND'S FAILURE TO COMPENSATE FOR WIND DRIFT WHILE LANDING, RESULTING IN THE AIRCRAFT GOING OFF THE SIDE OF THE RUNWAY AND COLLIDING WITH A POND.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- In flight encounter with weather, landing - flare/touchdown
  - weather condition - crosswind
- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - compensation for wind conditions - improper, pilot in command (cause)
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - water

## Analysis

THE PILOT STATED HE ENCOUNTERED A WIND GUST JUST AS HE WAS INITIATING HIS LANDING FLARE. THE AIRCRAFT WAS BLOWN TO THE RIGHT AND HE DID NOT PLACE THE FLIGHT CONTROLS TO CORRECT FOR THIS. THE AIRCRAFT TOUCHED DOWN AND RAN OFF THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY. THE AIRCRAFT THEN COLLIDED WITH A POND AND NOSED OVER COMING TO REST INVERTED IN THE POND.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19930427014499A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19930427014499A), Apr 27, 1993: Cessna 172P, Orlando, FL, Substantial damage. Swerved off runway landing in gusty crosswind. Ran into a pond and nosed over. Incorrect crosswind control inputs.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
