## Probable cause

THE PILOT-IN-COMMAND'S INADEQUATE COMPENSATION FOR WIND CONDITIONS AND DELAYED REMEDICAL ACTION.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - weather condition - tailwind (contributing factor)
  - remedial action - delayed, pilot in command(cfi) (cause)
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, landing - roll
  - compensation for wind conditions - inadequate, pilot in command(cfi) (cause)
  - ground loop/swerve - inadvertent, pilot in command(cfi)

## Analysis

THE CFI WAS INSTRUCTING A RATED PILOT IN THE OPERATION OF THE CONVENTIONAL LANDING GEAR AIRPLANE. DURING THE LANDING ON RUNWAY 17 THE WINDS SHIFTED AND WERE FROM THE NORTH. THE RATED PILOT STARTED TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE ON LANDING ROLL AND THE CFI TOOK CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE. HE ADDED POWER BUT THE AIRPLANE GROUND-LOOPED TO THE LEFT AND THE RIGHT WING AND ELEVATOR WERE DAMAGED.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19930529015739A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19930529015739A), May 29, 1993: Piper PA18150, Pensacola, FL, Substantial damage. Lost directional control on landing roll. CFI took over but ground looped. Blamed windshift. Wind light variable.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
