## Probable cause

THE PILOT IN COMMAND'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN GROUND CLEARANCE WHILE MANEUVERING OVER THE RUNWAY THRESHOLD RESULTING IN THE LEFT WING CONTACTING THE GROUND.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Dragged wing,rotor,pod,float or tail/skid, landing
  - clearance - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing
- On ground/water collision with object, landing
  - object - tree(s)

## Analysis

THE PILOT STATED THAT WHILE ON APPROACH A ULTRALIGHT AIRCRAFT WAS PERFORMING A PARALLEL APPROACH. HE MANEUVERED TO THE LEFT TO AVOID HIM. AS HE PASSED THE RUNWAY THRESHOLD HE LOWERED THE LEFT WING TO MOVE FURTHER TO THE LEFT AWAY FROM THE ULTRALIGHT. THE LEFT WING CONTACTED THE GROUND. THE AIRCRAFT ROLLED TO THE RIGHT AND THE RIGHT WING CONTACTED THE GROUND. THE AIRCRAFT THEN ROLLED BACK TO THE LEFT, THE LEFT WING AGAIN CONTACTED THE GROUND, AND THE AIRCRAFT VEERED TO THE LEFT AND COLLIDED WITH TREES.

## Factual narrative

On September 10, 1994, about 1315 eastern daylight time, a Schweizer, SGS 2-33A, N34215, registered to Robert A. Burbank, collided with trees while landing at Bob Lee Airport, Deland, Florida, while on a 14 CFR part 91 pleasure flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time and no flight plan was filed. The aircraft received substantial damage and the private-rated pilot was not injured. The flight originated at Deland, Florida, on September 10, 1994, at 1300.

The pilot stated that while on final approach he maneuvered to the left to avoid an ultralight aircraft which was on a parallel approach with him. As he crossed the runway threshold he put his left wing down to move further left away from the ultralight aircraft. The left wing contacted the ground. The aircraft rolled to the right and the right wing contacted the ground. The aircraft rolled back to the left, the left wing again contacted the ground, and the aircraft veered to the left and collided with trees.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19940910026119A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19940910026119A), Sep 10, 1994: Scwzer SGS233A, Deland, FL, Substantial damage. On final veered to left to miss ultralight parallel same runway. Wing hit ground banking too avoid the ultralight.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
