## Analysis

THE PILOT REPORTED THAT WHILE HE WAS LANDING WITH A 6 TO 7 KT CROSSWIND, THE PLANE WAS BLOWN TOWARD THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY. IN ORDER TO AVOID THE RUNWAY LIGHTS, HE INTENTIONALLY MANEUVERED THE AIRCRAFT OFF THE SIDE OF THE RUNWAY, INTO THE GRASS. WHEN HE FOUND THAT HE WOULD BE UNABLE TO STOP BEFORE CROSSING AN INTERSECTING RUNWAY, HE INITIATED A GO-AROUND. DURING THE LIFT-OFF, THE AIRCRAFT STRUCK AN INTERSECTION MARKER CONE. AFTER THE GO-AROUND AND AN UNEVENTFUL LANDING, THE PILOT FOUND A DEEP GASH IN THE BOTTOM OF THE AFT FUSELAGE.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

- [Accident 19820718030209A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19820718030209A), Jul 18, 1982: Piper PA28235, Falls City, NE, Substantial damage. Drifted off runway alignment on approach. Landed in grass. Struck marker on go around. Tore a gash in the fuselage.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
