## Analysis

THE PILOT STATED THAT HE HAD INTENTIONALLY SHUT DOWN THE ENGINE-- SO AS TO ATTEMPT A POWER OFF 'DEADSTICK' LANDING. AS HE WAS DESCENDING, THE PILOT CHANGED HIS PLANS AND DECIDED TO RESTART THE ENGINE--BUT THE ENGINE WOULD NOT START. WHILE ATTEMPTING THE RE-START, THE WINDS ALOFT CARRIED THE AIRPLANE AWAY FROM THE AIRPORT. THE PILOT DID NOT COMPENSATE FOR THE WINDS AND CRASH LANDED IN A DITCH, JUST SHORT OF THE AIRPORT. A POST-CRASH INSPECTION OF THE ENGINE REVEALED NO PRE-EXISTING MECHANCIAL DISCREPANCIES.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19880523023279A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19880523023279A), May 23, 1988: Amtrty TAYLORMONO, Marshalltown, IA, Substantial damage. Shut down engine to attempt engine out landing. Too low and unable restart, crash landed short of airport.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
