## Probable cause

THE FAILURE OF THE AIRCRAFT ENGINE DUE TO WATER CONTAMINATION. THE PILOT EXECUTED A LANDING IN A FLOODED RICE FIELD WHICH DID NOT PERMIT A SUCCESSFUL LANDING.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, maneuvering - aerial application
  - fluid,fuel - contamination (cause)
  - fluid,fuel - water (cause)
- Forced landing, maneuvering - turn to landing area (emergency)
- In flight collision with terrain/water, landing - flare/touchdown
  - terrain condition - water

## Analysis

THE PIC HAD BEEN PERFORMING A SWATH RUN TO A FIELD WHEN THE ENGINE LOST POWER. THE PIC WAS ABLE TO EXECUTE A LANDING IN A FLOODED RICE PADDY, BUT FLIPPED INVERTED UPON CONTACT WITH THE WATER. THE ENGINE QUIT DUE TO CONTAMINATED FUEL IN THE SYSTEM. THE FUEL FARM WHERE THE PIC ORGINALLY FUELED HIS ACFT WAS FOUND TO HAVE BEEN CONTAMINATED WITH WATER.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19890615015779A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19890615015779A), Jun 15, 1989: Scwzer G164B, Brinkley, AR, Substantial damage. During a turnaround the engine quit, nosed over landing in a flooded rice field. Found water all through fuel system

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
