## Probable cause

ENGINE FAILURE DUE TO FAILURE OF AN ENGINE CYLINDER.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - mech failure/malf, maneuvering - aerial application
  - engine assembly,cylinder - cracked (cause)
  - load jettison - performed, pilot in command
  - engine assembly,cylinder - failure,total (cause)
  - emergency procedure - initiated, pilot in command
- Forced landing, descent - emergency

## Analysis

WHILE CONDUCTING AN AERIAL APPLICATION OPERATION, THE PLT SAID THAT HE EXPERIENCED A GRADUAL LOSS OF POWER. HE DUMPED HIS CHEMICAL LOAD AND ATTEMPTED TO RETURN TO HIS BASE AIRFIELD. ENROUTE, THE ENGINE QUIT COMPLETELY, AND AN EMERGENCY LDG WAS ATTEMPTED IN A SOFT FARM FIELD, THAT RESULTED IN A NOSE OVER. POST ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION RVEALED #1 CYLINDER HAD FAILED CAUSING THE POWER FAILURE.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19890728025769A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19890728025769A), Jul 28, 1989: Scwzer G164B, Portland, AR, Substantial damage. Engine lost power on spray run dumped load and headed for base. Engine quit. Nosed over landing. NR1 cylinder broke

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
