## Probable cause

FAILURE OF THE NON-CERTIFICATED PILOT TO MAINTAIN ADEQUATE ALTITUDE, WHILE MANEUVERING THE HELICOPTER. THE PILOT'S LACK OF EXPERIENCE AND PROPER CERTIFICATION (QUALIFICATION) WERE RELATED FACTORS.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Dragged wing,rotor,pod,float or tail/skid, maneuvering
  - proper altitude - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - qualification, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - lack of total experience, pilot in command (contributing factor)
- In flight collision with terrain/water, maneuvering

## Analysis

WHILE FLYING HIS HOMEBUILT HELICOPTER, THE NON-CERTIFIED PILOT WAS MANEUVERING ABOUT 4 FEET AGL AND DRAGGED A SKID. CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT WAS LOST AND IT COLLIDED WITH THE TERRAIN, SUSTAINING SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE. THE PILOT HAD A TOTAL OF ABOUT 19 HOURS, OF WHICH 10 WERE DUAL INSTRUCTION RECEIVED IN 1983.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900107000129A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900107000129A), Jan 7, 1990: Amtr ROTORWAYEXEC, Mountain Iron, MN, Substantial damage. Dragged a skid during air taxi turn and lost control causing a crash. No license or medical certificate.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
