## Probable cause

FAILURE OF THE PILOT TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT. HIS LACK OF EXPERIENCE IN THE TYPE OF AIRCRAFT WAS A RELATED FACTOR.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, takeoff - roll/run
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - lack of total experience in type of aircraft, pilot in command (contributing factor)
- On ground/water collision with object, takeoff
  - object - fence (contributing factor)
- On ground/water encounter with terrain/water, takeoff
  - terrain condition - ravine (contributing factor)
  - terrain condition - dirt bank/rising embankment (contributing factor)

## Analysis

WHILE ATTEMPTING TO TAKE OFF IN HIS NEWLY PURCHASED TAIL-WHEEL EQUIPPED ACFT, THE COMMERCIAL PILOT LOST DIRECTIONAL CONTROL AND IT WENT THROUGH A FENCE & A RAVINE, THEN STRUCK A LEVY. THE ACFT SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE WING, LIFT STRUTS, LANDING GEAR AND PROPELLER. THE PLT SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES. THE PLT HAD A TOTAL FLIGHT TIME OF ABOUT TWO HOURS IN THIS TYPE OF ACFT, WHICH WAS RECEIVED IN THE PREVIOUS 24 HOURS.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900305003469A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900305003469A), Mar 5, 1990: Piper STCPA22, Lonoke, AR, Substantial damage. Lost directional control of newly purchased tail wheel aircraft on takeoff roll. Hit fence and dirt levy.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
