## Probable cause

INADEQUATE PRE-FLIGHT PLANNING AND PREPARATION, MISJUDGED FUEL CONSUMPTION CALCULATIONS AND RE-FUELING NOT PERFORMED BY THE PILOT IN COMMAND.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, cruise
  - light condition - dark night (contributing factor)
  - weather condition - unfavorable wind (contributing factor)
  - preflight planning/preparation - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
  - wind information - not identified, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - fuel consumption calculations - misjudged, pilot in command (cause)
  - refueling - not performed, pilot in command (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- Nose over, landing

## Analysis

THE PLT SAID THAT WHILE CRUISING, DURING A NIGHT CROSS-COUNTRY FLIGHT, THE ENGINE QUIT DUE TO FUEL EXHAUSTION. AN EMERGENCY LDG WAS ATTEMPTED ON AN INTERSTATE HIGHWAY WHICH RESULTED IN A NOSE OVER. POST-ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION REVEALED THE FUEL TANKS TO BE EMPTY OF USABLE FUEL. THE PLT SAID HE ENCOUNTERED STRONGER THAN ANTICIPATED HEAD WINDS, CONTRIBUTING TO LOWER GROUND SPEEDS.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900321005019A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900321005019A), Mar 21, 1990: Cessna 150G, Concordia, MO, Substantial damage. Ran out of fuel en route at night. Landed on a highway and nosed over. Blamed strong head winds. Aloft only one hour

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
