## Probable cause

FUEL CONTAMINATION AND INADEQUATE AIRCRAFT PREFLIGHT BY THE PILOT IN COMMAND.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, maneuvering
  - fluid,fuel - water (cause)
  - aircraft preflight - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
- Forced landing, maneuvering - turn to landing area (emergency)
- Nose over, landing

## Analysis

THE PVT PILOT SAID THAT HE HAD JUST DEPARTED RUNWAY 35 AND HAD TURNED CROSSWIND, WHEN THE ENGINE BEGAN TO SPUTTER. HE MADE A TURN TO RETURN TO THE AIRSTRIP AND LAND ON RUNWAY 17, BUT THE ENGINE LOST POWER, COMPLETELY. UNABLE TO REACH THE PVT AIRSTRIP, AN EMERGENCY LANDING WAS MADE IN A FALLOW CORN FIELD, WHICH RESULTED IN A NOSE OVER. A POST-ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION REVEALED THE FUEL WAS CONTAMINATED WITH WATER.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900326005779A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900326005779A), Mar 26, 1990: Cessna 150G, Ankeny, IA, Substantial damage. Lost power on climbout. Tried return. Landed in fallow field. Nosed over water in fuel.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
