## Probable cause

IMPROPER USE OF CARBURETOR HEAT BY THE PILOT, WHICH RESULTED IN CARBURETOR ICING. THE WEATHER (CARBURETOR ICING CONDITION) WAS A RELATED FACTOR.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, cruise
  - weather condition - carburetor icing conditions (contributing factor)
  - fuel system,carburetor - ice (cause)
  - carburetor heat - improper use of, pilot in command (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- On ground/water collision with object, landing - roll
  - object - tree(s) (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE PILOT REPORTED THAT DURING FLIGHT, THE ENGINE PROGRESSIVELY LOST POWER. AN EMERGENCY LANDING WAS MADE IN A SMALL CLEARING, BUT THE PILOT WAS UNABLE TO STOP BEFORE THE AIRCRAFT COLLIDED WITH TREES AT THE END OF THE CLEARING. THE PILOT SUFFERED A BROKEN LEG. NO PREIMPACT MECHANICAL PROBLEM WAS FOUND WITH THE AIRCRAFT OR ENGINE. ACCORDING TO ICING PROBABILITY CHARTS, METEORLOGICAL CONDITIONS WERE CONDUCIVE FOR CARBURETOR ICING AT CRUISE POWER.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900414009039A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900414009039A), Apr 14, 1990: Boeing A75N1, Pleasant Grove, AR, Substantial damage. Engine quit en route. Overshot open field on landing and struck trees. Conditions good for carb ice.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
