## Probable cause

IMPROPER USE OF CARBURETOR HEAT BY THE PILOT. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS WERE CARBURETOR ICING CONDITIONS, POWER LINES AND VISUAL OUTLOOK INADEQUATE BY THE PILOT.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, maneuvering
  - single engine aircraft
  - weather condition - carburetor icing conditions (contributing factor)
  - carburetor heat - improper use of, pilot in command (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- In flight collision with object, landing
  - object - wire,static (contributing factor)
  - visual lookout - inadequate, pilot in command (contributing factor)
- In flight collision with terrain/water, descent - uncontrolled

## Analysis

WHILE PRACTICING MANEUVERS, DURING A SOLO, STUDENT FLIGHT, THE PILOT SAID THAT THE ENGINE FAILED. AN EMERGENCY LDG WAS ATTEMPTED IN A WHEAT FIELD WHICH RESULTED IN A COLLISION WITH A POWER LINE, THEN THE TERRAIN. CONDITIONS WERE CONDUCIVE FOR THE FORMATION OF CARBURETOR ICING, AND POST ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION REVEALED NO FUEL OR MECHANICAL ABNORMALITIES.

## Other investigations on N50973 (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
