## Probable cause

COMPENSATION FOR WIND CONDITIONS WERE MISJUDGED AND AIRCRAFT CONTROL WAS NOT MAINTAINED BY THE PILOT IN COMMAND.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Overrun, takeoff - roll/run

WHILE ATTEMPTING TO TAKEOFF ON A 2500 FOOT GRASS STRIP, DURING STRONG, GUSTY, CROSSWIND CONDITIONS, THE COMMERCIAL PILOT LOST CONTROL AND COLLIDED WITH THE TERRAIN SHORTLY AFTER BREAKING GROUND. THE ACFT WAS LOADED WITH THE PILOT AND THREE PAX, ABOUT 40 GALLONS OF FUEL AND BAGGAGE. THE AIR TEMPERATURE WAS ABOUT 86 DEGREES AND THE 90 DEGREE CROSSWIND WAS ABOUT 18 KNOTS, GUSTING TO 25.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900507014859A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900507014859A), May 7, 1990: Piper PA28R201, Starbuck, MN, Substantial damage. Was slammed back to runway at liftoff due to windshear and excessive crosswind that exceeded crosswind component.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
