## Probable cause

FUEL STARVATION DUE TO A LOOSE FUEL STRAINER SCREEN. A FACTOR RELATED TO THIS ACCIDENT WAS LACK OF SUITABLE TERRAIN FOR A FORCED LANDING.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - mech failure/malf, approach - vfr pattern - final approach
  - fuel system,screen - loose (cause)
  - fluid,fuel - starvation (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- Nose over, landing
  - terrain condition - none suitable (contributing factor)

## Analysis

WHILE ON FINAL APPROACH, AT ABOUT 350 FEET AGL, THE ENGINE FAILED. AN EMERGENCY LANDING WAS ATTEMPTED, SHORT OF THE RUNWAY, RESULTING IN A NOSE OVER IN A PLOWED FIELD. POST ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION REVEALED A LOOSE FUEL STRAINER SCREEN HAD TURNED SIDEWAYS IN THE LINE AND RESTRICTED THE FUEL FLOW.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900626022639A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900626022639A), Jun 26, 1990: Cessna 180, Goddard, KS, Substantial damage. Engine quit on final. Landed short in plowed field and nosed over. Fuel strainer screen came loose. Blocked fuel.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
