## Probable cause

ENGINE FAILURE FOR UNDETERMINED REASONS. A FACTOR IN THE ACCIDENT WAS THAT THERE WAS NO SUITABLE TERRAIN IN WHICH TO MAKE A FORCED LANDING.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power, takeoff - initial climb
  - 1 engine - failure,total (cause)
  - reason for occurrence undetermined
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- In flight collision with terrain/water, landing
  - terrain condition - none suitable (contributing factor)

## Analysis

WHILE PRACTICING TAKEOFFS AND LDGS THE RIGHT ENGINE FAILED AT ABOUT 300 FEET AGL. UNABLE TO RESTART THE ENGINE, AND WITH AIRSPEED AND ALTITUDE DETERIORATING, THE INSTRUCTOR PILOT TOOK OVER THE CONTROLS AND ATTEMPTED AN EMERGENCY 'GEAR UP' LDG STRAIGHT AHEAD IN A CORN FIELD, WHICH RESULTED IN SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE ACFT. POST ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION FAILED TO REVEAL THE CAUSE OF THE ENGINE FAILURE.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900625022279A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900625022279A), Jun 25, 1990: Beech B60, Hutchinson, KS, Substantial damage. Reported lost right engine on climbout. Too slow for single engine. Landed gear up off airport. Power loss unknown.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
