## Probable cause

The student pilot's improper recovery from a bounced landing and his failure to maintain directional control while landing.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - recovery from bounced landing - improper, pilot in command (cause)
- On ground/water collision with object, landing - roll
  - object - fence

## Analysis

After takeoff, the student pilot remained in the traffic pattern and intended to practice landings in the tail-wheeled airplane. During the student pilot's first landing attempt, the airplane bounced, and touched down with a "left crab." He attempted to straighten the airplane; however, it departed the left side of the runway and struck a fence. The student pilot reported 40 hours of total flight experience, which included about 30 hours in the same make and model as the accident airplane. He did not report any mechanical malfunctions.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
