In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Airframe/component/system failure/malfunction, approach - vfr pattern - downwind
  - landing gear,nose gear assembly - binding(mechanical) (cause)
  - maintenance, inspection - inadequate, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - landing gear, nose gear assembly - corroded (contributing factor)
  - flight control,rudder - jammed (cause)
- Hard landing, landing - flare/touchdown
- Nose over, landing - roll
  - terrain condition - rough/uneven (contributing factor)

## Analysis

WHILE TRYING TO ROLL OUT OF A LEFT TURN ON DOWNWIND THE PILOT EXPERIENCED A JAMMED RUDDER CONTROL. FULL AILERON CONTROL WAS NOT AVAILABLE BECAUSE OF THE AILERON-RUDDER INTERCONNECT SYSTEM AND A CONSIDERABLE BUFFET WAS INDUCED DURING AN ATTEMPT TO LEVEL THE WINGS. THE AIRCRAFT DESCENDED RAPIDLY IN A LEFT SPIRAL UNTIL GROUND CONTACT WAS MADE ABOUT 400 FT DOWN RUNWAY 36. THEN IT TRAVELLED ABOUT 150 FT AFTER LEAVING THE PAVEMENT AND BECAME INVERTED IN ROUGH TERRAIN. INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THE PROTECTIVE BOOT WAS FOUND MISSING FROM THE NOSE STRUT. THE NOSE GEAR BEARING WAS LACKING LUBRICATION AND EXHIBTED CORROSION.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19820521018639A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19820521018639A), May 21, 1982: Piper PA22150, Seneca Falls, NY, Substantial damage. Rudder jammed in left position in pattern. Interconnected aileron affected. Nosed over landing. Nose gear bearing.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
