## Probable cause

THE PILOT LOST CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT WHILE LANDING IN GUSTY WIND CONDITIONS.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - flare/touchdown
  - compensation for wind conditions - improper, pilot in command (cause)
  - weather condition - crosswind (contributing factor)
  - weather condition - gusts (contributing factor)
- Nose gear collapsed, landing - flare/touchdown
  - landing gear,nose gear - overload

## Analysis

THE PILOT OF THE PIPER PA-28 WAS LANDING WHEN HE ENCOUNTERED MODERATE TURBULENCE AND CROSS WINDS. THE PILOT WAS MAKING A NO FLAP LANDING, MAINTAINING A HIGH AIRSPEED AND IN A LEFT CRAB. WHEN THE MAIN GEAR TOUCHED DOWN THE AIRCRAFT SLID TO THE LEFT, THE RIGHT WING HIT THE RUNWAY AND THEN THE NOSE GEAR COLLAPSED. THE AIRCRAFT SLID ON THE RUNWAY AND CAME TO REST IN THE GRASS, ABOUT 50 FEET FROM THE END OF THE RUNWAY PAVEMENT.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19890528013349A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19890528013349A), May 28, 1989: Piper PA28180, Oneonta, NY, Substantial damage. Lost directional control landing in strong gusty crosswind. Slid sideways on runway.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
