## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S DECISION TO ABORT THE LANDING TOO FAR DOWN THE RUNWAY. A FACTOR WAS: THE SMALL TREE LOCATED OFF THE END OF THE RUNWAY.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- In flight collision with object, landing - aborted
  - aborted landing - delayed, pilot in command (cause)
  - object - tree(s) (contributing factor)

## Analysis

PILOT STATED HE TOUCHED DOWN ABOUT 1/3 THE WAY DOWN THE RUNWAY BUT THE SURFACE PROVIDED LITTLE OR NO BRAKING ACTION. REALIZING THAT HE WAS NOT GOING TO STOP, HE ADDED POWER FOR A GO-AROUND. FLYING SPEED WAS ATTAINED AT THE END OF THE RUNWAY, AND DURING LIFT-OFF THE RIGHT WING CONTACTED A SMALL TREE OUTBOARD OF THE RIGHT WHEEL WHICH BECAME EMBEDDED 6 TO 8 INCHES INTO THE WING. THE PILOT THROTTLED THE ENGINE FULL BACK AND LANDED, COMING TO REST ABOUT 200 FEET OFF THE END OF THE RUNWAY.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19890805027349A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19890805027349A), Aug 5, 1989: Piper PA28140, Barker, NY, Substantial damage. Unable to stop on wet grass runway, began go around. Wing hit small tree. Pilot aborted takeoff, landed off airport

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
