## Probable cause

THE DUAL STUDENT'S MISJUDGEMENT OF THE AIRPLANE'S ALTITUDE AND SPEED DURING THE FLARE FOR LANDING, AND THE IMPROPER USE OF POWER DURING THE FLARE. IN ADDITION, THE CFI FAILED TO ADEQUATELY SUPERVISE THE DUAL STUDENT'S ACTION.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Hard landing, landing - flare/touchdown
  - flare - misjudged, dual student (cause)
  - throttle/power control - improper use of, dual student (cause)
  - supervision - inadequate, pilot in command(cfi) (cause)

## Analysis

THE STUDENT FLARED TOO HIGH, DID NOT REDUCE THROTTLE, AND THE AIRCRAFT BEGAN TO BALLOON. BACK PRESSURE WAS APPLIED BY THE STUDENT AS THE AIRSPEED DECREASED, AND HE REDUCED THROTTLE TO THE IDLE POSITION STALLING THE AIRCRAFT. THE AIRCRAFT DROPPED ABOUT 15 FT TO A THREE POINT LANDING.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Incident 19890802032879I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19890802032879I), Aug 2, 1989: Cessna 172P, Newburgh, NY, Minor damage. Made a hard landing while practicing touch and go landings. Damaged nose gear and fire wall.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
