## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S MISJUDGING SPEED AND DISTANCE RESULTING IN HIS OVERSHOOTING THE LANDING AND RUNNING OFF THE END OF THE RUNWAY.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Overrun, landing - roll
  - airspeed - misjudged, pilot in command (cause)
  - distance - misjudged, pilot in command (cause)
- On ground/water collision with object, landing - roll
  - object - tree(s) (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE PILOT SAID THAT DURING LANDING HE CAME IN HIGH AND FAST. THE AIRCRAFT BALLOONED TWICE AND HE ATTEMPTED TO GO AROUND BUT DECIDED TO ABORT. THE AIRCRAFT RAN OFF THE END OF THE RUNWAY HITTING A TREE WITH THE LEFT WING.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19890909034509A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19890909034509A), Sep 9, 1989: Cessna 172N, Bayport, NY, Substantial damage. High and fast landing. Ballooned in ice. Tried go around then aborted. Overran runway. Left wing hit a tree.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
