## Probable cause

THE PILOT FAILED TO ABORT THE TAKEOFF AFTER LOSING DIRECTIONAL CONTROL DURING THE TAKEOFF GROUND RUN. FACTORS RELATED TO THE ACCIDENT WERE: CROSSWIND, HIDDEN OBSTRUCTION IN HIGH VEGETATION, AND LOW TIME IN MODEL.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, takeoff - roll/run
  - weather condition - crosswind (contributing factor)
  - weather condition - gusts (contributing factor)
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - lack of total experience in type of aircraft, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - abort - not performed, pilot in command
- In flight collision with object, takeoff - initial climb
  - terrain condition - dirt bank/rising embankment (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE AIRPLANE WAS TAKING OFF ON RUNWAY 25 IN A LEFT CROSSWIND WHEN IT VEERED OFF THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY INTO SOFT WET SOD. THE TAKEOFF ROLL CONTINUED AND SHORTLY AFTER BECOMING AIRBORNE THE LEFT MAIN GEAR COLLIDED WITH A KNOLL THAT WAS OBSCURED BY TALL GRASS AT A DISTANCE. THE CONVENTIONAL GEAR WHEEL ASSEMBLY BENT UNDER AND THE AIRPLANE CAME TO REST ON THE MOUND OF DIRT. THE WIND WAS FROM 200 DEGREES AT 12 KNOTS WITH PEAK GUST TO 15 KNOTS.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900128001339A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900128001339A), Jan 28, 1990: Univac GC1B, Pittstown, NJ, Substantial damage. Weathervaned into crosswind on takeoff. Exited runway into soft sod, airborne. Left gear hit knoll folded. Stopped.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
