## Probable cause

THE LOSS OF DIRECTIONAL CONTROL BY THE PILOT DURING A SHORT SOFT FIELD TAKEOFF ON A SNOW PACKED RUNWAY.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- In flight collision with terrain/water, takeoff - aborted
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - abort - performed, pilot in command
  - terrain condition - snowbank

## Analysis

DURING A SHORT SOFT FIELD TAKEOFF, THE AIRCRAFT BEGAN TO DRIFT TO THE LEFT. THE PILOT TRIED TO CORRECT, BUT THEN DECIDED TO ABORT THE TAKEOFF. THE NOSE WHEEL HIT FIRST AND THE AIRCRAFT FLIPPED ONTO ITS BACK AS IT CAME TO REST. THE TAKEOFF WAS FROM A SNOW PACKED RUNWAY WITH SEVERAL SOFT SPOTS.

- [Accident 19900131001389A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900131001389A), Jan 31, 1990: Cessna 182N, Milford, PA, Substantial damage. Premature nose high, soft field takeoff, drifted left, aborted takeoff. Left wing hit and aircraft flipped over.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
