## Probable cause

THE PILOTS IMPROPER OPERATION OF THE FLIGHT CONTROLS WHICH RESULTED IN THE LOSS OF CONTROL OF DIRECTIONAL CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE DURING A TOUCH AND GO LANDING. FACTORS RELATED TO THE ACCIDENT WERE THE PILOT'S LACK OF TOTAL EXPERIENCE.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - touch-and-go - performed, pilot in command
  - flight controls - improper use of, pilot in command (cause)
  - lack of total experience, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
- In flight collision with object, landing - aborted
  - object - tree(s)

## Analysis

THE STUDENT PILOT SAID THAT AFTER 4 OR 5 TOUCH AND GO'S ON RUNWAY 21, HE WAS PERFORMING ANOTHER LANDING WHEN THE RIGHT WING STARTED TO LIFT AND THE AIRPLANE STARTED TO DRIFT TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY. LEFT RUDDER WAS APPLIED TO AVOID HITTING RUNWAY LIGHTS. THE AIRPLANE DID NOT RESPOND. THE PILOT ALSO STATED THAT HE APPLIED FULL POWER, LEFT RUDDER, AND PROBABLY LEFT AILERON WHEN THE AIRPLANE JUMPED TO THE LEFT AND HEADED TOWARD A TREE ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY. THE PILOT REPORTED THAT DURING THE GO-AROUND HE TRIED TO CLIMB OVER THE TREE, BUT HE WAS NOT SUCCESSFUL.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900409008969A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900409008969A), Apr 9, 1990: Univar 1082, Hudson, NY, Substantial damage. Over corrected on swerve after landing. Began go around after veering off runway alignment. Struck trees.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
