## Probable cause

THE FAILURE OF THE PILOT TO MONITOR THE FUEL GAUGES AND FUEL STARVATION. A FACTOR RELATED TO THE ACCIDENT WAS THE FAILURE OF MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL TO DETECT THE BENT CONDITION OF THE REAR ENGINE TANK FUEL SELECTOR CONTROL CABLE.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, cruise - normal
  - all engines
  - maintenance, inspection - inadequate, other maintenance personnel (contributing factor)
  - fluid,fuel - starvation (cause)
  - fuel supply - inattentive, pilot in command (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- Ditching, landing - flare/touchdown
  - ifr procedure - intentional, pilot in command

## Analysis

THE PILOT WAS OPERATING THE AIRPLANE ON A FERRY PERMIT WHEN HE EXPERIENCED A DOUBLE POWER LOSS DUE TO FUEL STARVATION. THE PILOT DITCHED IN A RESERVOIR. NORMALLY THE LEFT TANK FEEDS THE FRONT ENGINE AND RIGHT TANK FEEDS THE REAR ENGINE. POST CRASH EXAMINATION SHOWED BOTH ENGINES WERE BEING FED FROM THE LEFT TANK, DUE TO A BENT REAR ENGINE FUEL LEVER SELECTOR CONTROL CABLE.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900702023549A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900702023549A), Jul 2, 1990: Cessna 337, Bedford, NY, Substantial damage. Both engines quit. Ditched in reservoir. Right fuel selecter stuck left tank. Cable bent selector readings faulty.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
