## Probable cause

THE FAILURE OF THE PILOT TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL DURING A REJECTED LANDING. FACTORS RELATED TO THE ACCIDENT WERE: IMPROPER USE OF THE FLIGHT CONTROLS BY THE PILOT, A VARIABLE WIND, AND LACK OF EXPEREINCE IN TYPE OF AIRPLANE.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - aborted
  - weather condition - crosswind (contributing factor)
  - weather condition - tailwind (contributing factor)
  - go-around - attempted, pilot in command
  - flight controls - improper use of, pilot in command (cause)
  - lack of total experience in type of aircraft, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
- In flight collision with object, landing - aborted
  - object - tree(s)

## Analysis

THE PILOT WAS LANDING AND BOUNCED TWICE. HE REJECTED THE LANDING AND AS HE APPLIED POWER, THE AIRPLANE SWERVED APPROX 40 DEGREES TO THE LEFT. THE AIRPLANE STRUCK TREES AND CAME TO A STOP. THE PILOT WAS LANDING ON RUNWAY 21 AND THE WINDS WERE REPORTED AS VARIABLE BETWEEN THE SW TO THE NW AT 5 TO 10 KNOTS. THE PILOT SAID HE USED INSUFFICIENT RIGHT RUDDER WHEN HE APPLIED FULL POWER. THE FAA REPORTED THE VARIABLE WIND WOULD HAVE BEEN BETWEEN A CROSSWIND AND A TAILWIND. THE PILOT HD 213 HOURS TOTAL TIME WITH ONE HOUR IN MAKE AND MODEL.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900719027469A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900719027469A), Jul 19, 1990: Piper PA28180, Hudson, NY, Substantial damage. Ballooned on landing. Variable wind caused drift uncorrected off runway. Began go around. Hit trees.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
