## Probable cause

THE PILOT DID NOT MAINTAIN FLYING SPEED, THE AIRPLANE STALLED AND DESCENDED INTO TREES, AT THE DEPARTURE END OF THE RUNWAY.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - in flight, takeoff - initial climb
  - wrong runway - selected, pilot in command (cause)
  - terrain condition - rough/uneven (contributing factor)
  - terrain condition - uphill (contributing factor)
  - lift-off - premature, pilot in command (cause)
  - stall/mush - inadvertent, pilot in command
- In flight collision with object, descent - uncontrolled
  - object - tree(s) (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE PILOT LANDED ON A 2,000 FEET GRASS STRIP TO THE SOUTH, MADE A 180 DEGREE TURN ON THE SAME RUNWAY. HE THEN TOOK OFF TO THE NORTH, UPHILL ON A ROUGH UNEVEN RUNWAY. AT 55 KNOTS THE AIRPLANE WOULD NOT GAIN ALTITUDE AND IT WAS TOO LATE FOR THE PILOT TO ABORT THE TAKE OFF. THE AIRPLANE'S ATTITUDE INCREASED NOSE HIGH AND THE AIRPLANE HIT TREES ABOUT 500 FEET FROM THE DEPARTURE END OF THE RUNWAY.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900728029049A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900728029049A), Jul 28, 1990: Cessna 172N, Edinburg, NY, Substantial damage. Unable to clear trees on takeoff from short uphill grass strip. Stalled it into trees off end of runway.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
