## Probable cause

THE CFI FAILED TO MAINTAIN A SAFE SINK RATE RESULTING IN AN UNDERSHOOT OF THE RUNWAY.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - in flight, approach - vfr pattern - base turn
  - emergency procedure - simulated, pilot in command(cfi)
  - proper descent rate - excessive, dual student (cause)
  - remedial action - not performed, pilot in command(cfi) (cause)
- Undershoot, landing - flare/touchdown

## Analysis

RETURNING FROM A PRACTICE SESSION, THE CFI DECLARED A SIMULATED ENGINE OUT PROCEDURE. AS THE AIRPLANE ENTERED A CLOSE LEFT BASE, SEVERE SINK RATE WAS ENCOUNTERED. THE CFI WAS UNABLE TO RECOVER FROM THE SINK RATE AND THE AIRPLANE HIT SHORT OF THE RUNWAY. THE AIRPLANE THEN SLID ONTO THE RUNWAY TURNING TO THE RIGHT AND LOSING THE RIGHT WING AND NOSE GEAR.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900812033289A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900812033289A), Aug 12, 1990: Beech C23, Burlington, CT, Destroyed. CFI gave student engine out over airport. Unchecked sink rate on final caused landing short. CFI failed add power.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
