## Probable cause

THE PILOT DID NOT PROPERLY COMPENSATE FOR THE CROSS WIND AND FAILED TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL DURING TAKEOFF.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, takeoff - aborted
  - compensation for wind conditions - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
- On ground/water collision with object, takeoff - aborted
  - object - tree(s) (contributing factor)

## Analysis

THE PILOT ATTEMPTED A TAKEOFF ON RUNWAY 18 WITH WINDS FROM 220 DEGREES AT 10 TO 15 KNOTS. THE GRASS RUNWAY WAS 2700 FEET LONG AND 90 FEET WIDE. PEOPLE WERE AHEAD AND ON THE LEFT AND THE PILOT SAID HE LET THE PLANE DRIFT TO THE RIGHT TO GIVE THEM MORE CLEARANCE. HE SAID HE THEN HIT A BUMP AND BECAME AIRBORNE AND THE WHEELS WERE DRAGGING IN BRUSH. THE PILOT DECIDED TO ABORT THE TAKEOFF AND CLOSED THE THROTTLE. THE AIRCRAFT THEN STRUCK A TREE. THE FAA REPORTED THEY COULD FIND NO EVIDENCE OF A PRE EXISTING FAILURE OR MALFUNCTION WITH THE FLIGHT CONTROLS OR BRAKES AND THE AIRPLANE DEPARTED THE RUNWAY, WITH OVER 1000 FEET OF USABLE RUNWAY LEFT, WENT DOWN AN EMBANKMENT AND STRUCK A TREE.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900815033519A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900815033519A), Aug 15, 1990: Boeing A75N1, Burdett, NY, Destroyed. Lost directional control on takeoff bounced into air prematurely. Drifted unable climb. Aborted and struck a tree.

## Other investigations on N7772J (2)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
