## Probable cause

ABORTED TAKEOFF WITH INSUFFICIENT ROOM AVAILABLE TO STOP. THE PILOT'S DELAYED DECISION TO ABORT THE TAKEOFF WAS A FACTOR.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- On ground/water collision with object, takeoff - aborted
  - terrain condition - water,glassy (contributing factor)
  - lift-off - delayed, pilot in command (cause)
  - object - tree(s) (contributing factor)
  - aborted takeoff - delayed, pilot in command (cause)

## Analysis

THE PILOT ATTEMPTED A TAKEOFF IN A FLOAT EQUIPPED AIRPLANE. THE LAKE SURFACE WAS 3000 FEET LONG AND SMOOTH (GLASSY). THE PILOT SAID IT TOOK LONGER TO GET ONTO THE STEP AND GET AIRBORNE. ONCE AIRBORNE, HE SAID HE FELT HE WOULD NOT CLEAR THE TREES AT THE EDGE OF THE LAKE AND ABORTED THE TAKEOFF. HE SETTLED TO THE LAKE SURFACE AND RAN INTO TREES AT THE END OF THE LAKE. THE FAA REPORTED NO EVIDENCE OF MECHANICAL MALFUNCTION.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19900828040249A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900828040249A), Aug 28, 1990: Waco DSO, Keene, NH, Substantial damage. Ran too long trying to liftoff glassy water. Aborted too late and struck trees on shore of pond.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
