## Probable cause

A HARD LANDING, AFTER A POWER LOSS DUE TO IMPROPER USE OF THE CARBURETOR HEAT CONTROL BY THE PILOT.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - nonmechanical, cruise - normal
  - weather condition - carburetor icing conditions (contributing factor)
  - carburetor heat - improper use of, pilot in command (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- Hard landing, landing - flare/touchdown
  - landing gear,skid assembly - overload

## Analysis

THE PILOT WAS ON A POSITIONING FLIGHT AT 1000 FEET AGL WHEN HE EXPERIENCED A POWER LOSS DUE TO CARBURETOR ICE. HE AUTOROTATED INTO A LARGE OPEN AREA, MAKING A HARD LANDING. THE MAIN ROTOR STRUCK THE TAIL BOOM AND THERE WAS A SMALL POST CRASH FIRE FROM A RUPTURED HYDRAULIC LINE. THE ENGINE WAS TEST RUN SATISFACTORILY AFTER THE ACCIDENT.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19901115050729A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19901115050729A), Nov 15, 1990: Bell 47G3B2A, Nantucket, MA, Destroyed. Engine quit on approach to service area. Made hard autorotation landing. Damage skid tailboom. Carb icing prevalent

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
