## Probable cause

THE FAILURE OF THE PILOT TO MAINTAIN AIRSPEED WHICH RESULTED IN AN INADVERTENT STALL AND HARD LANDING. FACTORS RELATED TO THE ACCIDENT WERE: THE POWER LOSS AND IMPROPER MAINTENANCE ON THE ENGINE.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(partial) - mech failure/malf, takeoff - initial climb
  - ignition system - failure,partial (contributing factor)
  - maintenance - improper, pilot in command (contributing factor)
- Hard landing, descent - emergency
  - planned approach - improper, pilot in command
  - airspeed - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
  - stall/mush - inadvertent, pilot in command (cause)
- Gear collapsed, landing - flare/touchdown
  - landing gear - overload

## Analysis

THE PILOT EXPERIENCED A POWER LOSS AFTER TAKEOFF, MADE A 180 DEGREE TURN AND TRIED TO LAND ON THE DEPARTING RUNWAY IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. THERE WAS TRAFFIC ON THE RUNWAY SO HE TRIED TO MAKE THE CROSSWIND RUNWAY. AS HE CAME OVER THE CROSSWIND RUNWAY, THE AIRPLANE STALLED AND MADE A HARD LANDING, COLLAPSING THE LANDING GEAR. POST CRASH EXAMINATION BY THE FAA DID NOT DETERMINED THE CAUSE OF THE POWER LOSS, BUT DID NOTE THE MAGNETO TIMING AND POINT SETTING WERE NOT AS RECOMMENDED.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
