## Probable cause

A HARD LANDING DUE TO THE FAILURE OF THE PILOT TO PROPERLY ARREST HIS DESCENT RATE AND THE FAILURE OF THE FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR TO ADEQUATELY MONITOR THE ACTIONS OF THE PILOT.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Hard landing, landing - flare/touchdown
  - flare - misjudged, dual student (cause)
  - monitoring - inadequate, pilot in command(cfi) (cause)

## Analysis

THE PRIVATE PILOT WAS PRACTICING LANDINGS WITH A FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR ON BOARD. THE PILOT SAID, 'THE SECOND LANDING WAS A HARD LANDING, BUT DID NOT SEEM HARD ENOUGH TO CAUSE ANY DAMAGE.' A POST FLIGHT INSPECTION FOUND THE SKIN WRINKLED ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE FUSELAGE AND THE RIGHT FRONT DOOR JAMMED.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19901007046409A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19901007046409A), Oct 7, 1990: Maule M5235C, Springbrook, PA, Substantial damage. Made hard landing. Impact wrinkled the fuselage. Student owner had low time in type and CFI even less time in type

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
