## Probable cause

THE LOSS OF ENGINE POWER FOR AN UNDETERMINED REASON(S).

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power, cruise - normal
  - reason for occurrence undetermined (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- In flight collision with object, landing - flare/touchdown
  - object - tree(s)

## Analysis

SOON AFTER LEVELING AT 2,500 FT FOLLOWING TAKEOFF, THE PILOT LEANED THE MIXTURE FOR CRUISE, AND THE ENGINE BEGAN RUNNING UNUSUALLY ROUGH. THE PILOT ENRICHED THE MIXTURE, BUT THE ROUGHNESS CONTINUED. HE THEN SWITCHED TO ONE MAGNETO AND THE ENGINE STOPPED PRODUCING POWER. WHEN SET TO THE OTHER MAGNETO, THE ENGINE RAN, BUT ROUGH. WITH INSUFFICIENT POWER TO RETURN TO THE DEPARTURE AIRPORT, 8 NM AWAY, THE PILOT MADE AN EMERGENCY LANDING IN A WOODED AREA. POST-CRASH FIRE DAMAGE PRECLUDED FUNCTIONAL TESTING OF THE FUEL AND IGNITION SYSTEMS.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19901102048649A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19901102048649A), Nov 2, 1990: Cessna 182P, Lorain - Elyria, OH, Destroyed. Power loss on climbout. Large mag drop. Crashed into trees. Fire precluded mag check. Prior 200 RPM drop on mags.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
