## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S IMPROPER USE OF CARBURETOR HEAT RESULTING IN AN ENGINE FAILURE DUE TO CARBURETOR ICE AND A SUBSEQUENT OFF AIRPORT LANDING IN UNSUITABLE TERRAIN.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power, takeoff - initial climb
  - weather condition - carburetor icing conditions (contributing factor)
  - carburetor heat - improper use of, pilot in command (cause)
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- Nose over, landing - flare/touchdown
  - terrain condition - rough/uneven (contributing factor)
- Nose down, landing - roll

## Analysis

THE PILOT TOOK OFF AND EXPERIENCED A LOSS OF POWER AFTER TAKEOFF. WHEN CARBURETOR HEAT WAS ADDED, THE POWER RETURNED AND THEN STARTED SURGING. POWER WAS LOST AND A FORCED LANDING WAS MADE IN A ROUGH, OPEN FIELD. THE NOSE WHEEL BROKE OFF DURING LANDING AND THE AIRPLANE FLIPPED OVER. POST ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION DISCLOSED NO EVIDENCE OF A MECHANICAL MALFUNCTION OR FAILURE WITH THE ENGINE OR AIRFRAME.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
