## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S IMPROPER IN FLIGHT DECISION TO LAND ON A SNOW COVERED RUNWAY. THE LACK OF ADEQUATE BRAKING ACTION RESULTED IN THE PILOT INTENTIONALLY GROUND LOOPING THE AIRPLANE AND OVERLOADING THE MAIN LANDING GEAR. FACTORS RELATED TO THE ACCIDENT WERE SNOW COVERED RUNWAY AND A TAILWIND.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- On ground/water encounter with weather, landing - roll
  - preflight briefing service - performed, pilot in command
  - weather evaluation - improper, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - weather condition - snow (contributing factor)
  - flight into known adverse weather - intentional, pilot in command (cause)
  - pressure, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - weather condition - unfavorable wind (contributing factor)
  - missed approach - not performed, pilot in command (cause)
  - weather condition - crosswind (contributing factor)
  - weather condition - tailwind (contributing factor)
  - weather condition - icing conditions (contributing factor)
  - ground loop/swerve - intentional, pilot in command (cause)
- Main gear collapsed, landing
  - landing gear, main gear strut - overload (contributing factor)
- Miscellaneous/other, other

## Analysis

THE PILOT HAD EXECUTED AN ILS APPROACH TO RUNWAY 24R. THE PILOT OF A CESSNA 210 REPORTED THE RUNWAY BRAKING ACTION TO BE POOR. THE REPORTED WIND WAS FROM 350 DEGREES AT 18 KTS. ON TOUCHDOWN, THE PILOT OF N58EQ USED REVERSE ENGINE THRUST AND FULL BRAKING BUT THE AIRPLANE DID NOT DECELERATE SUFFICIENTLY. THE PILOT SAW THE END OF THE RUNWAY APPROACHING AND STEERED THE AIRPLANE OFF THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY AND INTENTIONALLY GROUNDLOOPED. THE MAIN LANDING GEAR COLLAPSED DUE TO OVERLOAD FORCES.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19910214002419A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19910214002419A), Feb 14, 1991: Gulstm G1159, Cleveland, OH, Substantial damage. Unable to stop on icy runway in severe crosswind. Ground looped at end to prevent overrun. Collapsed right gear.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
