## Probable cause

THE INSTRUCTOR PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE DURING LANDING IN A STRONG CROSSWIND.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- On ground/water encounter with weather, landing - roll
  - weather condition - crosswind (contributing factor)
  - directional control - not maintained, pilot in command (cause)
- Loss of control - in flight, landing - aborted
  - stall - inadvertent, pilot in command (cause)
- Dragged wing,rotor,pod,float or tail/skid, other
  - terrain condition - runway

## Analysis

THE INSTRUCTOR PILOT WAS LANDING ON RUNWAY 20 WITH A 20-KNOT RIGHT QUARTERING CROSSWIND. DURING ROLLOUT, THE AIRPLANE BEGAN TO WEATHERVANE AND VEER TO THE RIGHT. APPLICATION OF LEFT RUDDER DID NOT CHANGE ITS DIRECTION. THE INSTRUCTOR ADDED POWER, BUT THE AIRPLANE BANKED LEFT AFTER BECOMING AIRBORNE. THE PROPELLER AND LEFT WING STRUCK THE RUNWAY. THE AIRPLANE CAME TO REST ALONG THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19910309005189A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19910309005189A), Mar 9, 1991: Cessna 172P, Dayton, OH, Substantial damage. Weather vaned into gusty crosswind. Tried to go around nose high. Stalled and hit ground left wing then nose.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
