## Probable cause

THE PILOT'S INADVERTENT EXIT (FALLING) FROM THE AIRPLANE, WHILE ATTEMPTING TO RECOVER AN OBJECT FROM OUTSIDE THE AIRPLANE WITHOUT SETTING THE PARKING BRAKE AND/OR SHUTTING DOWN THE ENGINE.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, standing - engine(s) operating
  - aircraft unattended/engine(s) running - inadvertent, pilot in command (cause)
  - brakes(emergency) - not used, pilot in command
- On ground/water collision with object, taxi
  - object - aircraft parked/standing

## Analysis

AS THE PILOT WAS STARTING THE AIRPLANE, THE IGNITION KEY SNAGGED ON A FINGER RING AND WAS INADVERTENTLY PULLED FROM THE IGNITION. THE PILOT MOVED HIS HAND AND THE KEY EXITED THE OPEN DOOR. THE PILOT'S SEAT BELT WAS NOT SECURED. HE TRIED TO REACH THE KEY FROM THE COCKPIT. AS HE REACHED FOR THE KEY ON THE GROUND, HE FELL FROM THE AIRPLANE. THE AIRPLANE TAXIED UNATTENDED AND STRUCK A PARKED AIRPLANE.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
