## Probable cause

AN INADEQUATE ANNUAL INSPECTION BY THE MECHANIC WHICH RESULTED IN THE INFLIGHT FAILURE OF THE ELEVATOR CONTROL CABLE.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Airframe/component/system failure/malfunction, maneuvering
  - flt control syst,elevator control cable/rod - failure,total (cause)
  - maintenance, annual inspection - inadequate, other maintenance personnel (cause)
- Loss of control - in flight, approach - vfr pattern - final approach
  - weather condition - downdraft (contributing factor)
  - elevator - not possible, pilot in command (cause)
  - remedial action - not possible, pilot in command (cause)
- Hard landing, landing - flare/touchdown
  - terrain condition - grass

## Analysis

THE PILOT WAS DOING AEROBATIC MANEUVERS WHEN THE UP ELEVATOR CABLE BROKE. HE RETURNED TO THE AIRPORT AND SET UP FOR A LANDING USING ELEVATOR TRIM. ON FINAL AS HE REDUCED POWER, HE ENCOUNTERED A DOWNDRAFT AND WAS UNABLE TO PREVENT THE AIRPLANE FROM HITTING THE GROUND NOSE FIRST. POST CRASH EXAMINATION BY THE FAA DISCLOSED THE AIRPLANE HAD RECEIVED AN ANNUAL INSPECTION 12 HOURS PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT. THEY FAA STATED THEY BELIEVED THE CABLES WERE WORN BEYOND WHAT COULD BE EXPECTED FROM 12 HOURS OF OPERATION.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
