## Probable cause

THE FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR ALLOWED THE STUDENT TO CONTINUE A SIMULATED ENGINE FAILURE TO A HARD LANDING, RESULTING IN A BOUNCED LANDING AND LOSS OF DIRECTIONAL CONTROL AND A COLLISION WITH THE VASI.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Hard landing, landing - flare/touchdown
  - recovery from bounced landing - not performed, pilot in command(cfi) (contributing factor)
  - aircraft control - not maintained, pilot in command(cfi) (contributing factor)
- Miscellaneous/other, landing
  - object - airport facility (cause)

## Analysis

DURING A TRAINING FLIGHT THE CFI GAVE THE STUDENT A SIMULATED ENGINE OUT LANDING. THE CFI THOUGHT THE FLIGHT WOULD END SHORT OF THE INTENDED RUNWAY, BUT ELECTED TO LET THE STUDENT CONTINUE THE APPROACH. THE AIRPLANE LANDED HARD AND BOUNCED. THE AIRPLANE DRIFTED LEFT, STARTED TO SETTLE AND THE CFI POWERED UP THE ENGINE FOR A GO-AROUND; HOWEVER, THE LEFT GEAR AND STABILATOR STRUCK THE VASI TO THE LEFT OF THE RUNWAY.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19910622026069A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19910622026069A), Jun 22, 1991: Piper PA28R200, Doylestown, PA, Substantial damage. Bounced on sfl. Added power. Veered, cut power. CFI added power for go around hit VASI. CFI allowed stretched glide.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
