## Probable cause

THE FAILURE OF THE PILOT TO ATTAIN THE PROPER LIFT-OFF SPEED DURING A TAKEOFF ON A GRASS RUNWAY, RESULTING IN A LOSS OF CONTROL AND COLLISION WITH POWER LINES. A FACTOR RELATED TO THE ACCIDENT WAS THE PILOT'S LACK OF UNDERSTANDING OF THE AIRPLANE'S PERFORMANCE.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - in flight, takeoff - initial climb
  - terrain condition - grass
  - lift-off - premature, pilot in command (cause)
  - airspeed - not attained, pilot in command (cause)
  - performance data - not understood, pilot in command (contributing factor)
- In flight collision with object, takeoff - initial climb
  - object - wire,transmission

## Analysis

THE PILOT WAS TAKING OFF FROM A GRASS RUNWAY. THE WINDS WERE CALM AND THE TEMPERATURE WAS 80 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT. HE DID NOT ATTAIN PROPER GROUNDSPEED BEFORE ROTATING THE AIRPLANE FOR TAKEOFF. THE AIRPLANE BECAME AIRBORNE, BUT THE PILOT LOST CONTROL AND THE AIRPLANE STRUCK POWER LINES.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19910701025189A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19910701025189A), Jul 1, 1991: Maule M6235, Arcade, NY, Substantial damage. Premature lift off from short strip led to loss of control on climbout. Struck powerline. Behind power curve.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
