## Probable cause

THE FAILURE OF THE PILOT TO ENSURE THE HELICOPTER HAD NO LATERAL MOTION UPON TOUCHDOWN.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - flare/touchdown
  - rotorcraft flight controls - improper use of, pilot in command(cfi) (cause)
  - cyclic - improper use of, pilot in command(cfi) (cause)

## Analysis

THE HELICOPTER WAS APPROACHING TO LAND AT AN AIRPORT WITH RESTRICTIVE NOISE ABATEMENT PROCEDURES. THE PILOT ARRIVED OVER THE AIRPORT, APPROXIMATELY 1000 FEET AGL AND WAS CLEARED TO A TAXIWAY. THE PILOT DESCRIBED THE DESCENT AS STEEP AND HE MISSED HIS DESIRED LANDING AREA. THE PILOT ELECTED TO LAND IN A GRASSY AREA NEAR THE DESIGNATED LANDING AREA, HOWEVER, HE TOUCHED DOWN WITH A LEFT LATERAL MOVEMENT AND UPON TOUCHDOWN, THE HELICOPTER ROLLED OVER.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19910714027309A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19910714027309A), Jul 14, 1991: Robsin R22BETA, White Plains, NY, Substantial damage. High descent rate unable to make taxiway moved over to land on grass. Moving sideways at touchdown. Rolled over.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
