## Probable cause

THE ON GROUND COLLISION WITH TREES DURING A FORCED LANDING AFTER THE PILOT EXPERIENCED AN ENGINE FAILURE DUE TO A BROKEN EXHAUST VALVE.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of engine power(total) - mech failure/malf, maneuvering - turn to reverse direction
  - engine assembly,valve,exhaust - failure,total (contributing factor)
  - emergency procedure - initiated, pilot in command
- Forced landing, descent - emergency
- In flight collision with object, descent - emergency
  - object - tree(s)

## Analysis

THE PILOT STATED THAT WHILE MANEUVERING THE AIRPLANE AT ABOUT 700 FEET AGL THE ENGINE QUIT. THE PILOT MADE A FORCED LANDING IN A FIELD AND BEFORE HE WAS ABLE TO STOP, THE AIRPLANE HIT TREES. EXAMINATION OF THE ENGINE REVEALED THE NUMBER FOUR EXHAUST VALVE FAILED.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
