## Probable cause

THE PILOT-IN-COMMAND'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE ON THE LANDING ROLL, RESULTING IN AN ON GROUND COLLISION WITH A TREE. FACTORS RELATED TO THE ACCIDENT WAS THE PILOT'S IMPROPER USE OF THE BRAKE SYSTEM.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Loss of control - on ground/water, landing - roll
  - touch-and-go - discontinued, pilot in command (contributing factor)
  - brakes(normal) - improper use of, pilot in command
  - aircraft control - not maintained, pilot in command (contributing factor)
- On ground/water collision with object, landing - roll
  - object - tree(s)

## Analysis

WHILE DOING TOUCH AND GO'S, THE SEVENTEEN HOUR PILOT DECIDED DURING THE LANDING ROLL NOT TO TAKE OFF. THE PILOT STATED HE DID NOT KNOW IF HE HIT THE BRAKES, BUT HE MOMENTARILY ADDED POWER THEN DECIDED NOT TO TAKE OFF. THE AIRPLANE VEERED OFF THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY AND HIT TREES. THE FAA EXAMINED THE AIRPLANE AND FOUND NO DISCREPANCIES WITH THE FLIGHT OR ENGINE CONTROLS. A TEST OF THE BRAKES SHOWED THEY OPERATED NORMALLY.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19910806032079A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19910806032079A), Aug 6, 1991: Cessna 150J, Burgettstown, PA, Substantial damage. Lost directional control on touch and go. Ran off runway 400 feet into trees and down an embankment.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
